Good Italian Beefs in Aurora

I was born and raised in Aurora, and we had a place called "Don Walker's Sandwich Shop" that had the best Italian Beefs.  That was many years ago and I moved away from the area in 1976.

On a recent visit up there, I was glad to see that they are still there and gave them a try.  It's now called "Sandwich Center", but it's still the same ol' place.  Fantastic Italian Beefs.  I sure miss them here in Texas.

Anyone ever try this place?  I looked and didn't see them listed anywhere on here.  I've never had any beefs anywhere else, but I can't imagine them being any better anywhere else.  I'd love to hear about anyone elses experiences there.  It's at 257 W. New York Street just west of downtown Aurora.

EDIT:  After some research, I found it's still called "Don Walker's Sandwich Center".

Re: Good Italian Beefs in Aurora

Thank you for the heads up on this place. I will add them to my listing queue, and try and get to it this week.

I have never heard of this place, but I will see if my dad has ever had one from there. He live out around there.

As far as never tasting another beef, I think you are missing out. Next time you are up here you need to try some others.

There can be a huge difference from one place to another. And then a total similarity that 10 places share. The ones that are "home brew" and cook their own will offer the best beef, but they may not be your idea of what a beef should be.

I am not sure that my body can handle it, but I think I need to do at least one beef a week, and see what is out there.

Re: Good Italian Beefs in Aurora

Thanks, and I hope you like it.  I didn't make it into the city much back then and stayed pretty much around the Fox Valley.  The Dallas area has never heard of Italian Beefs.  The same goes for deepdish and stuffed pizzas here.  Very frustrating to say the least.

Don Walker's has been using their own family recipe at that shop since the 60's and I'd love to hear an Italian Beef connoisseur's opinion on it.  Like I said, I can't imagine it being much better.  In the meantime, I'm going to try and check out a couple of places I've found in this area to see if they measure up to Chicago.

Bon Appetit!

Re: Good Italian Beefs in Aurora

I was back in Aurora a couple of weeks ago and had the chance to hit Don Walkers again.  Wonderful!!  They use green tabasco peppers (I think...I'm not a pepper expert) .if you order it hot, not jalapenos like here in Texas.

I was going to try Portillos, but a family emergency back here forced me to cut my trip short.  Maybe next time.
