Jeri's Grill

Review added: March 28, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

hot peps, dipped and with cheese. Both the peps and juice were served on the side and they only had American cheese, so I past on that.

brontoburger Review:

This place is a full on diner not a hot dog/beef joint, but I heard from a couple people that they had great IT beef sandwiches. They serve there beefs with a cup of beef juice on the side like a French dip but it has Italian spices instead, you handle the dipping yourself. I gotta say that the bread really stole the show, as it was unlike the traditional Gonella type roll which you usually get. These rolls had a nice crunch and stood up to a good dipping. The beef was pretty good but not great, not seasoned to well and a little spare but it seemed to be decent quality. Overall I would probably get a beef here again but would not go out of my way for it. However, it is really comforting that places like this are still around.

Jay's Beef

Review added: April 17, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

hot dipped, with provolone

brontoburger Review:

I was really excited to learn that there was a new Beef place close to my house and it was called Jay's Beef, so not too long ago I got to have lunch there, as it was closed when I tried to order there a few Sundays prior. Apparently they have been open since 2007 and I'm assuming it was towards the end of the year. At any rate, I finally got to check this place out and I was pleased. The beef itself was pretty tasty but maybe could have been seasoned a little more, either that or I like more sodium in my meals. The bun was nice a fresh and they dipped it the way a dipped beef should be dipped. However, the real show stopper here was the hot peppers, I'm pretty sure they are made in house because they were unlike any I've ever seen any place else. These peppers had a nice hand cut quality, had significant heat and spice and also had a good crunch, which I thought was kind of unconventional but really worked. I would highly recommend Jay's Beef for anyone that wants a quality Beef from people that know what they're doing, I would also like to add that even if you don't normally order yours hot, give them a try at this spot, the peppers here aren't excessively spicy, really fresh and most importantly, taste great.

Joe Boston's Italian Beef

Review added: April 17, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

hot dipped, with cheese sadly cheddar was the only option.

brontoburger Review:

I don't know anything about the history of this place but the fact that cheddar is the only cheese option and the name Boston is in the title are a little suspect BUT, I gotta tell you this is one of, if not the best Beef joints in town. Joe Boston's pretty much sums up everything I look for in a good Beef sandwich, very well prepared beef, really tasty peppers and the bread does not disappoint one bit. My only grievance with this place is the cheese issue, I know a lot of people don't consider a Beef a Beef if it got cheese on it but I don't care. I also know a lot of people would chastise me for having a dalliance with cheddar and I willingly submit to any trash talking that might occur. That was a mistake. Next time I'll do without the cheese, cheddar on a Beef is a sin and I repent. With that said, this place is great and the service is friendly, which I only consider a bonus to an already exceptional establishment. If you are looking for a great Beef sandwich Joe Boston's is well worth a visit.

Mr. Beef

Review added: April 18, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

hot dipped (not misted), with provolone

brontoburger Review:

Chances are if you are on this site, then you know Mr. Beef is one of the most celebrated Beef spots in Chicago. They are lauded by people like Jay Leno and often make a top lists for Beefs and just Chicago food in general. Anyways, I gave this place a try and by no means would I say that it's the best Beef but it's good, not damn good just good. I ordered mine hot dipped and with provolone. I will say the fact that they had provolone and not cheddar is an immediate plus, which seems rudimentary but apparently isn't. The beef was pretty good, well cooked not stringy or gristley, the bread was exactly what it should have been, and the peppers were really nice also. My big issue was the dip or should I say lack thereof. Dipped does not mean a little moist which is what I got, don't skimp when someone says dipped. To sum up, the Beef was satisfactory but the dip was unacceptable, give this place a shot but if you want it dipped tell them to soak it, enough said.

George's Hot Dogs

Review added: May 2, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

Hot dipped with mozzarella

brontoburger Review:

Before jumping into this I must say that I have had issues with George's in the past. There have been dipping issues i.e. sandwiches not really being dipped at all. There have also been issues with his hours meaning sometimes it seems George opens when he wants to be open and closes when he feels like it but I won't hold that against him too much. In fact I kind of respect him for marching to the beat of his own drummer and I'm glad he's is still in the neighborhood, if you've been to Bucktown recently, then you know places like his are a dying breed With that said I noticed his place wasn't on ItalianBeef.com yet so I thought I would visit his spot and take care of that. I don't know if George has just had some off days but the Beef I got today was much better than those that I've gotten in the past, by far. The meat was really tender, the dip was great and I think they might have gotten new peppers because I was sweating; they were real hot but still had a great taste and crunch. I would also like to add that I think George's has got the best fries around, I like them crunchy and he delivers a crunchy hefty fry. So all in all George's Hot Dogs might not be the most consistent spot but I'm willing to roll the dice any time, if you are ever in the neighborhood George's is definitely not to be missed.

Budacki's Drive In

Review added: May 19, 2008

brontoburger Ordered:

Hot Dipped with Mozz.

brontoburger Review:

Not long ago my friend told me about this spot by his house called Budacki’s and he summed it up as a “legit” Beef joint. So one day after skating with said friend we went to eat at said Beef joint and I was not disappointed. Apparently it makes an appearance in the film “I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With", which was set in Chicago, this is a moot point however. This place probably has one of the best Beefs I’ve ever eaten. The dip was thorough and the beef itself was really well prepared, tender and not stringy at all. The real topper here though was the peppers; they had a nice crunch, perfect amount of heat I think even a piece of pickled ginger that was out of this world. Also I have to mention that this place uses a very tasty mozzarella. The only flaw I could find with this place was that they had sub-par fries (not crispy enough) but then again you don’t come to a spot like this for the fries. All in all, this place is the real deal, well worth checking out and they’ve got a parking lot to boot.
