I thought this was a pretty good beef. The serving size was huge. I ordered it with a pizza and having it delivered did not take away from the quality of the beef. My problem on this beef was the hot peppers. I ordered it with light hot peppers, and this thing was BURNING hot. Almost too spicy to enjoy. I would try it again and ask for the hot on the side. I would have given it a 4 if it was a little more on the mild side.

I am very happy with this place. My sister first told me about it, and the people she works with rave about it. I gave it a try and was very happy. The prices are reasonable, and it looks like the place hasn't changed in the last 40 years. I do not drink much soda, but Bostons has Mountain Dew on tap, so that makes me happy. I think the fries are very good too, and was happy with the hotdog when I ordered that. We even took my dad here and he loved it.

I tried this place out a few months back, and was happy with the beef. The inside of the restaurant is a bit kooky. It looks like it used to be a Mediterranean or Indian restaurant, and now they sell beefs and burgers. Anyhow that does not really matter or change the taste of the beef.  I agree with brontoburger, and think the peppers were great here. I never had anything like these before. Very homemade and very fresh.

I heard that this place had great beefs and was pretty disappointed. It was more of a French dip and everything was served on the side. The first dip I made of the beef was great. The juice was really spiced up and flavorful, but each dip after kinda tasted watered down. Since the sandwich was served dry, it had a nice crunch to it, even after dipped. The peppers were generic but good. I think this would make a great "emergency beef" since it is open 24-7, but I would not go here if one of my favorite spots was open.

So I ordered my beef dipped with hot peppers, and what I got was what I would call a dry beef. I am not sure if there is some juice shortage at this place, or if you need to order it soaked or wet. I think a dipped beef should be soaking wet when you get it. This was not. What I was really happy with at Mr. Beef is the hot peppers. These I thought were perfect. They were fresh, crunchy and not too hot. I thought they were just right.  The beef on the other hand could have used a bit more gravy. I will totally go here again, and see if they skimp me on the juice. The shake was pretty bad, and I would stay away from that in the future.

I went on the weekend and there were people from all walks of life. I would think the place is a mad house on a weekday during the lunch rush. The dining hall reminded me of a beer tent at Octoberfest.

Portillo's Hot Dogs - Forest Park

This restaurant is amazing. It runs like a well oiled machine. It was was packed, there were 20 people in front of us in line, and we made it in and out within 10 minutes. It runs more or less like a McDonald's but serves food that is not disgusting.

All the food was great. The beefs are good but not outstanding. You know they will be good when you go here, so it is a place that is consistent and you can always depend on it. They also do a really good job wrapping them if you get them to go. They wrap them in paper, then bag them individually in plastic and then put this in a paper bag. This keeps them warm for a long ride home too.

The shake was insane. We ordered a large and it was HUGE. It was enough for 5 people. Fries were good.

I like Portillo's and would always go back.

Al's #1 Italian Beef - Countryside

I was sick of seeing how Al's claims to be the best beef in Chicago and had to try it myself.

We tried the sweet beef first and was not impressed at all. It tasted "funny" to say the least. My dad summed it up as "Al's number one tastes like number 2". Our opinion changed when we tried the hot. The weird flavor that was over powering on the sweet beef went well on the hot.

After further tasting we came up with the special ingredient is mace, a spice used in Indian and Asian food, not really normal in a beef. Another site I read thought they used cinnamon.

If you go to Al's I would steer clear of anything other than a hot beef. We were all happy with the hot beef but the sweet was not eaten until we put some hot sauce on it to mask the weird taste. This review will be a little low, just because the weirdness of the flavor. I will give them another shot and see what I think.
